What’s Included in a Sand Change

Filter sand breaks down over time and stops trapping debris the way it did when new — usually every five to seven years. We replace it with properly graded pool filter sand and rebuild the filter bed correctly.
We also inspect the laterals and standpipe while the tank is open, since a cracked lateral is a common cause of sand blowing back into the pool after a change.

Why Old Sand Hurts Water Clarity

Worn sand rounds off and clumps, so it stops filtering fine debris even though the filter still runs normally. If your water looks duller than it used to despite a clean filter housing, old sand is a common cause.

It is an easy thing to overlook since the filter still “works” in the sense that water flows through it — it just is not filtering as finely as it should.

While we have the filter open, we also check the laterals and internal parts, since worn sand and damaged laterals often get blamed on each other.
